A ladder is a prompt, not a verdict

Evidence becomes persuasive when it answers the audit question and has a dependable basis. A reliability ladder can help challenge the next step, but it is not an automatic ranking or a numerical score.

Start with an explanation. Then seek a traceable record, corroborate it through a sufficiently independent route, and obtain direct verification where appropriate. These moves often strengthen the basis for a conclusion. They do not make irrelevant evidence relevant or guarantee authenticity.

A hypothetical reconciliation

A manager says an unreconciled difference is only timing. That explanation identifies a lead to investigate. A dated reconciliation helps trace the items and ownership. Supporting records can clarify when entries occurred. Directly checked subsequent settlement may support the timing explanation for a particular item. Each step answers a narrower question; none proves every item in the account has been resolved.

Test the quality at every step

Ask what the evidence proves, who created it, how it reached the auditor, and whether it is complete and precise enough. For a system export, assess accuracy, completeness and the extraction process. For an external document passed through the company, consider modifications and handling. Observation is direct, but usually covers a particular time and circumstance.

If two sources conflict, investigate the conflict rather than selecting the more convenient story. More pages of the same weak evidence may add volume without improving the conclusion.

PCAOB AS 1105 supplies general reliability principles in a US financial-audit context. This original ladder is an educational application, not an official PCAOB model or a universal local requirement.
